Mama coot with a baby coot next to her

Baby sighting!

Unfortunately, being so far away from the nest makes it more difficult to get good shots.  But that little fuzzy lump next to Mama is definitely a baby.

And since she’s still sitting on the nest, I bet she has more eggs about to hatch, which will mean more babies.  But this little one is walking around and enjoying being on the nest.

Also, there was a giant brood of ducklings – I counted at least 15. I don’t know if they were all hers, but she did have two drakes hanging around so I’m hoping they’re helping out a little because that’s a lot of ducklings there.

Mama coot sitting on the nest

I saw a little red head peeking out from underneath Mama today, so we have babies!

Unfortunately, it’s really difficult to get a good photo on the nest sometimes.  There’s dead vegetation on the bank in front, which I could theoretically pull up, but I could see it all turn into a bad slapstick comedy where there’s mud and water and me in the middle of it.

But since we have one baby, then I’ll start doing daily updates from next week.  A new batch of babies! Hurray!

I also got a great shot of one of the other coots picking up nesting materials.  Where are you building your nest, hon?

The coot nest

It definitely looks like they’re residing on Tinker’s Leen now instead of the canal proper.  Mama Coot’s been sitting on that nest all week, mostly dozing.

I’m hoping for babies soon. She wouldn’t be sitting on that nest if there weren’t eggs.

A new coot nest on Tinker's Leen

I think the nest might have moved.  Which is nice.

Instead of being on the canal properly, it’s now on Tinker’s Leen, a little stream just to the side of the canal.  This means they don’t have to worry about boats, and there’s plenty to eat around there.

Unfortunately, it makes it harder to photograph, as there are two large branches right in the way.  So even though I have taken a picture of a coot sitting on a nest with another coot swimming by, all you see is some twigs, a duck, and a coot.

But there is a coot sitting on the nest. And that tells me there are eggs.

One coot standing on the pavement

No nest as of yet, and they might not even build it in the same place, which would be highly disappointing.

However, this grumpy little buddy got up close to me enough for this photo. Either expecting food or a fight and they just got a photo instead.
